Altered States features a major new work in seven panels and a series of works on paper. These new works are a continuation of Roz's current interest in the effects of colour relationships. There is a musicality to Avent's selection and arrangement of colours and forms which is particularly evident in the title work of the exhibition, Altered States.

What is the voice capable of?

The Human Instrument is a bold concert experience exploring the full expressive range of the human voice.

In this program, Divisi positions the voice not just as a vehicle for text and melody, but as an instrument in its own right: percussive, theatrical, intimate, virtuosic, and communal. Expect moments of breathtaking beauty alongside works that stretch the limits of what voices can do — whispers, rhythmic propulsion, extended techniques, and rich harmonic tapestries.

Featuring music by leading Australian composers alongside masterworks from the canon, this performance showcases Divisi’s commitment to new commissions, fearless programming, and the celebration of the voice in all its forms.

At once visceral and refined, ancient and new, The Human Instrument invites audiences to hear the human voice as they’ve never heard it before.

Special Event | Conversation Piece with Kate Just

You're invited to join a knitting circle at CAM with Castlemaine based artist Kate Just on June 20, at 11.30am.

Join us for this special event and be part of a live knitting circle, engaging in conversation while contributing a crafted square to Kate's community-engaged artwork entitled Conversation Piece, which will be on display in the gallery.

Conversation Piece involves the creation of a giant, communally knitted and crocheted yellow length of fabric. This artwork has been created in public craft circles around Australia between 2022 and 2026 (including an earlier event at CAM), and toured regional galleries around Australia from 2023-2025 as part of theTamworth Textile Triennial.

Conversation Piece acts as a live, ongoing material documentation of the important process of collective making, gathering, talking, and listening. It materially manifests a collective ‘conversation’ across time and place. Conversation Piece is created in various shades of the artist's favourite colour – yellow. For Kate, yellow is the colour of spring flowers, the sun, honey and gold; it is a colour of warmth, light, joy, and exuberance. In this work, the colour yellow speaks to the optimism, openness and warmth that occurs when we work collectively, and open ourselves to new people, ideas and experiences.

Kate Just is an award-winning American born Australian artist based in Castlemaine. Just is best known for her inventive and political use of knitting in artworks which tackle feminist themes. In addition to her solo practice, Just often works socially and collaboratively within communities to create large scale, public art projects that tackle issues including sexual harassment and violence against women.

People of all genders and ages and craft abilities welcome, with all yarn provided.

Vote to celebrate local women in public art

For too long the stories of the founding women of our thriving local arts scene have been absent from the history books. Together, we can change that.

We are a leading partner in Mount Alexander Shire Council’s proposal to commemorate seven trailblazing local women in a new public artwork.

Known as the first women of Castlemaine Art Museum, the group stood in solidarity for better representation of women in art. They were instrumental in establishing Castlemaine Art Gallery and Museum (now known as our very own Castlemaine Art Museum).

Their story has been shortlisted in the Victorian Women’s Public Art Program. With your vote, funding from the program can help us create a new public artwork to acknowledge their place in history, forever. Voting closes Sunday 8 December. Please share this with your networks!
